Rubrics provide a readily accessible way of communicating and developing our goals with students and the criteria we use to discern how well students have reached them. The descriptions of performance are general, so students learn general qualities and not isolated, task-specific features for example, the description might say all relevant information was used to solve the problem, not that the numbers of knives, forks, spoons, and guests were used to solve the problem.

Holistic rubrics describe the work by applying all the criteria at the same time and enabling an overall judgment about the quality of the work.

For example, to determine a student's ability to give an extemporaneous speech, a teacher might allow a student to choose from many topics for the "speech" performance test. Realistically, any really worthwhile skill can probably be measured by an array of tasks that could be embodied in different performance tests.

All testing is to achieve these goals. Good general rubrics will, by definition, not be task directions in disguise, or counts of surface features, or evaluative rating scales.
